Multifunctional sports center De Beuk, Purmerend
ca. 8.600 m² GFA (excl. parking)
2015 – 2017
The new multifunctional sport center Purmerend combines an extensive sport program within a single location. The design houses large scale volumes and requires a large amount of parking spaces. Located in a sport park with rugby pitches alongside the plot the buildings relationship with its surroundings was an important part of our design. We choose to design a sports building that is as compact as possible to create a large entrance square.
The building presents itself as a monolith, the different programs have been combined to create an expressive mass with large incisions. The entrance with its large steps and the glass façade of the restaurant give the building character. The raised exterior terrace wraps itself around the restaurant to creating ample space to enjoy the sunshine and a balcony to view the sports fields.
The interior is comprised of natural colours and materials. Prefab concrete, white walls, ceiling in white and beige and wood accents form a modest base. A top of this a layer of fresh and expressive colours have been added, a graphical layer for signage and routing and the interior furnishing, for example the seats in the public stands.
Once inside the simplicity and clarity of the design is obvious. All the functions are easily accessible from the “cross shaped” central corridor. The routing enable all functions to be reached within a minimal distance. Sightlines run along this routing and end in views of the exterior of the entrance of a sport function. This principle has been used on all floors, including the parking garage, to increase the simplicity of orientation for all visitors.
