Sports complex De Wedert 2.0, Valkenswaard
ca. 4.525 m² GFA
July 2017 – December 2018
The design for sports complex de Wedert 2.0 consists of the renovation of the existing indoor and outdoor pool and the addition of a new sports hall, physiotherapy and restaurant. Creating a strong atmosphere, accessibility for a wide range of users and a high level of transparency formed the core values of the design.
The sports complex is located at the end of the Pastoor Heerkensdreef and forms the heart of sports park Den Dries. The dominant volume of the sports hall is minimized by partially realizing it below ground level. Placing a collar of smaller volumes, in front of the sports hall and swimming pool gives the overall complex a human scale. The high level of transparency makes the activities in the complex visible for the approaching visitors. The impressive marquise is enhances the warm, friendly and inviting character of the building.
The use of robust and high quality materials gives the exterior a timeless appearance. The mixture of shades and differentiating in the use of the same materials gives the building a unified yet diverse look.
The structure of the building is very clear. The core of the building is shaped by the restaurant with a view of all sports, flanked by the swimming pool, including its changing areas and club area, on the left and the sports hall on the right. The changing facilities of the sports hall are located underneath the restaurant. The entrance hall, offices and physiotherapy are located at the front of the building.
The clear structure is reflected in the materialization of the interior. The basic pallet is timeless, modest and naturel. The wooden construction which is visible in the restaurant gives it a warm atmosphere. The furniture, signage and the use of a soft green accent color create a finishing touch. The result is a contemporary, fresh and welcoming interior which invites the visitors to gather and dwell.
