A unique 2-lane swimming 50m pool has been realised in the basement of The Student Hotel in Amsterdam for former Olympic swimmer Johan Kenkhuis and his Swimgym. The biggest challenge was to fit the pool, changing area, showers and two exit routes within the existing column plan of a former printing press.
The design emphasizes and reinforces the beautiful rhythm and raw feel of the existing structure. Mosaic tiling has been added to the base of the columns and a white wash wooden acoustic ceiling panelling has been fitted within the beam structure. A black steel winding staircase forms one of the exit routes.
Raising the changing area and shower square has created enough space to place the mechanical sand filtration and pumps underneath it. From the shower square a thermal glass panel provides the visitor with a view of the pool.
The width of the lanes has been maximized by creating an overflow gutter on one side and widening the side along the adjoining gym to add an extra separation line to minimize wave interference. Buffering is located underneath the platform instead of in the overflow gutter to minimize sound. The placement a customized hinged wall creates the opportunity to use the pool as 4 x 25 m lanes.
The colour scheme and interior design matches that of The Student Hotel; a white and black basis with yellow and blue accents. A strong graphic layer was added in cooperation with George&Harrison.
